Can another character "accidently" attack yours?

I had someone do this to me today: I was about to go to another area and someone appeared, ran straight to my character and attacked me (no monster around). Only after 1/2 my HP were gone did he stop and say it was an accident. Is that possible? I tried taking a screenshot but it didn't take. So, was it an accident or was it on purpose (don't know how Blackstone handles this type of action) ? He apologized but it's left me with a bad taste in my mouth, so to speak.

"Accident" as in "oops, wrong person", perhaps, not accidentaly attacking...
