Is there anything worse than having your char killed in the time between getting the xp to level and being able to start the level-up process?

Yep, just had a character die after "reaching" level 26, losing a little over 16k xp as a result. In a word... *whimper*.

And the short answer is an incredibly annoying YES!

Having exactly the same **** thing happen to the same character. That's 32k+ xp needlessly gone.

The best thing to do is use a portal scroll when you level. It is much safer.
