Help

Post by HelloBSK »

I just purchased a computer with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor 4200+, 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM, Windows Vista Premium and a NVIDIA GeForce 6100. I can not run NWN2 on the machine and I think it is because the graphics card is an on board chip. I am looking at upgrading to the NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT card.

Do you think this will correct my problem?

I do not have internet from home so I can not download the updates... before I invest in a new card do I need the updates for it to work at all?

I have been out of commission for over 6 months and am JONESING!!!!

Let me explain the problem I am having. The game loads and plays the cinimatics, I get to the initial menu and select new campain. Once I do that the screen goes "nuts" and fads in and out with many different shaps and things popping in and out of the screen. After a while of me trying to change the settings to get this to stop the game locks up.

Is this because I do not have the updates or is it a graphics card problem? Windows Vista said my comp is rated a 3.0 due to graphics but the game only needs a rating of 1.0. Is Windows Vista the reason I need the updates?

I need INTERNET...

Section 9.4 of the readme file in your \Program Files\Atari\Neverwinter Nights 2 folder should list all supported video cards. Notice that the lowest supported model of Nvidia card is the 6800 so your 6100 is just too outdated for NWN2 IMHO. I myself am also using a 7600GT with no problems. I find it is quite efficient in regards to performance/price ratio.

If the gameplay gets too herky-jerky using the AMDX2, check to see if you have the game's affinity set to only one core since two cores is only really useful when using the nwn2 toolset to render and compile. Internal CPU timer discrepancies can cause all sorts of clientside lag spikes.

You're golden if you upgrade your video card. Truthfully though I'd go with the 7900GS if you're looking at the 7600GT. Or spring for the new 8800GS with 320MB video RAM. It's the little brother of the nVidia 8800 family. The cores are there, just less video RAM. It's bloody fast though.

This is the card I am looking at picking up today.

EVGA e-GeForce 7600 GT Graphics Card (256P2N553DX)
ECC 256P2N553DX

• 580MHz GPU
• Integrated TV-encoder
• 256MB of DDR3 memory
• Dual DVI-I connectors
• 24.0GB/second bandwidth
• PCI-Express interface

How can I find out whether or not my power supply is a 450? The book does not speak to this.

Another thing, I am not sure if it is because of Windows Vista, but when the game was done being installed it did not run the configuration utility when I played the game the first time and I can not find it anywhere.

Can anyone tell me the name of the file and where to find it?

Thanks!!!

A 250mb gfx card pulls about 125watts of power from ya power supply so upgradinbg it would be a very good idea

I would recommend not using Vista, unless you want to have problems.
Also, don't skimp on the power supply, here is the one I use:

"Glass" windows in Vista are kinda neat. But it seems like a waste of processing power for a modicum of window dressing...

It's like Microsoft adding tabbed browsing to IE2. Why use that when Firefox perfected it a long time ago. Window dressing may look pretty, but until its well tested, I still don't understand why people jump into using it.
