Confusion on crafting

OK, I understand that I'm supposed to figure things out, but still, it's good to know some of the basic mechanics….

I've found the socket gems very useful, but I can't seem to get the runes to work on bows. The bow tells me "piercing damage" or something like that, but I can't see how much damage is added and there doesn't seem to be an effect of adding a rune to a bow.
Am I doing something wrong?
Do I have to have Craft weapon skill to get it to work?

Speaking of Crafting skills, do they effect the Power of weapons where I add socket gems?

Also, the Forge stones, do I need to have Crafting skills in order to use them. (If I ever find the forge...)

Crafting skill is only useful for crafting items with forge stones.
