The Crimson Moon

Post by DM_Griphon »

Harvey, long-time Apprentice to Foxmore, has been speaking in public concerning a recent astronomical phenomenon Foxmore has discovered. The old Sage of the Keep has been seen referencing books, gazing through his telescope, and keeping to his Scrying Orb. Harvey describes an event that will come to be in a few nights, known only to the most learned scholars as the Rise of the Crimson Moon. Supposedly on the appointed night, a full moon will hang just above the Eastern horizon. Whether by some force of astrology or a mere optical illusion, the moon will appear to bleed a red haze, coating its usually ivory surface a deep shade of ruby red. Harvey warns that Foxmore, the superstitious wizard, has declared that this night is a most sacred night to the Dark Lord, Kazra, and all who revere him pay homage in the way they best know... by the Pillars.

"Foul happenings are said to happen during this terrible night," a timid Harvey says to an ensnared crowd, "Even the most lowly of monsters gain supernatural powers, and there are ancient tales of entire armies of the living dead rising from their sandy graves in the Wastelands. The borders between this plane of existence and that of the Abyss come so close that rifts and portals naturally rip open-- though predicting where is nearly impossible! Keep your children inside, and do not stray into the accursed Wastelands during the moonrise."

Could this prediction be true? Or is Foxmore just blowing hot air for attention? ... Perhaps not... he did for tell the coming of the Ancients, and the meteor.

Over a mug of ale Fleix Barbarrosa ponders the rumor of a crimson moon. As a gnome illusionist he knows that things like that can be conjured to fool the weak of mind.
"Well Felix shall yea have another," the barkeep asks.
"No my friend I have something to investigate," Felix replys flipping a gold piece to the barkeep as he stands.
"Thanks Felix ..." comments the barkeep.
"For the wife and kiddies..." Felix replies with a smile.
Out into the night Felix goes ... "I best check my gear before I go any further," Felix thinks to himself.
"Crimson Moon ... Ha ... I'll show them a crimson moon," Felix quips with a chuckle.
Casting true seeing and invisiblity he disappears into the night ....

The eggs were good.
The ant-things never noticed if he took just one, and Skraethas was careful.
He had carefully climbed the stone carved staircase leading to the surface when he noticed something was not right.
metal-eaters from the under-earth, the shadowed places... Why were they above?
The kobold smiled a reptilian grin, and followed them ever-so carefully to the man-village.
Ahh.. but this is where they stopped!
The "feelers" on these beasts were good to eat, and the legs, if boiled also were good.
You had to use wood. You had to use fists, or rocks.
They were hard to kill, but tastes okay.
Skraethas moved away from them and the man-village. He needed time to think of a plan to get the tender 'feelers' and collect the legs. Skraethas has not wandered very far at all when he stepped into a sticky strand..
Spiders? In the desert?
Spiders were good to eat! Skrae liked the feel of them popping between his teeth, however he was sure that whatever made this webbing was much too large for teeth-popping fun.
Skraethas slipped carefully out of the webbing. He knew better than to panick and possibly noticy the spider of his presence, by yanking on the threads.
Carefully up the top of a rock outcropping he crawled, and peered over the other side.
These spiders were huge!

So huge in fact, "yEeeeiivash kethieezs!!" Skraethas covered his snout with both paws, "Oops!" he exclaimed, after he'd been spotted by one of the two giant spiders. In the distance, he could hear voices, of man-things, and smell dwarf, but this was not coming from the village, but form behind the spiders.
Skraethas dropped-fell, into the sands below and looked for a place to run.
It was much too late for running as the spiderwebbing covered him like a tent. "yEeiYeeee!! Ghretheshilezz"
The small kobold exclaimed, trying carefully to free himself... The webbing was acidic, and began to eat into his satchel made from wolf-hides. Skraethas blinked a second eyelid over his eyes, protecting him from the acids, while he struggled to get free. Struggling only made matters worse. He could hear voices, and horses. dwarven curses, and arcane words, that flitted from his mind as fast as he heard them spoken.
Soon, one of these soft-skin things cut him loose from the webbing.
Skraethas grinned at the fellow, " yes is good, good is good, yes? Thanks you!" he said rather proudly as he spoke the man-tongue. He followed the fellow, who'd got on his horse and rode over tot he rest of them.
One of the dwarves spoke, "Och, there has'ta be more out 'ere, Kazra wouldnae jus' leave be wif jus' a couple measely spiders... Looky, th' moon still be blood red!"
Skraethas grinned to himself.
The man-things argued with the dwarves, and several told Skraethas he was much too small to be in a dangerous desert. Dangerous desert? this was home. This was where he gathered food!
Skraethas tried to explain to them he was strong, very strong.. Then he remembered the metal eaters.
These man-things made quick work of the spiders, Skraethas maybe should tell them of the metal eaters..
Yes! if they knew about them, he could collect the feelers... He could collect the legs!
"Yes.. is yes..! Skraeee.... I sees them metal eaters, yes? They are near yes? by man-village!"
One of the man-things said, " You know where monsters are?"
Skraethas nodded, "Is good, yes, this way, you follow!"
Ahh.. he would have more food soon eats food, and good food!
Skraethas motioned for them to follow him, and as he rounded the corner of a large stone outcropping he mentioned, "I hear sounds of things and see things un-not-normal-usual things, in big chasm yes? is bad is really real."
One of the man-things stopped, "What?" Skraethas pointed out towards the village gates, but then he caught a glimpse of shadowy mists, and wheels again towards the west, and pointed there. "bad is bad!! not good things coming!" The Kobold fell over covering his head with his hands as the rust monster rushed past him towards the man-things that were now engaged by some spirituous things as well.
Skraethas, collected himself, as well with anything shiney he saw left on the ground, not to mention some of the feelers of the rust monsters and parts of there legs.
While Skraethas did this. The man-things and dwarves, rested, cleaned ichor from their ruined blades, and armors.
Skraethas shook himself, not unlike a dog would do. This seemed to remove any residue of the acids the rust monsters had on their hides.
Now... if only he could get them into the ant-things caves in the chasm, he could have a lot of food then!
Skraethas walks ahead, towards the chasm, just out of sight of the party.
He rushed back, "More ghosty things yes? many yes? you go?"
One of the man-things said, "I think the kobold saw something, what did you see?"
Skraethas pointed, "Big hole, big yes? Ghosty things, and .. bad yes?"
Ahh this would convince them!
However... Skraethas was not too far off, in what would take place.
There were more spirits more undead things.... and yes, even a mighty dragon! But this dragon was dead.. Skraethas did not like dead things, not even dragons.
He waited for them to fight it, and as he did, he pulled out an old lute he'd found and 'ploinked' the strings, which made a grand noise. He banked on the gord shaped instrument, and he sang;
"Yes is good, bad for food,
man-things fight, with not metals but wood...
dead things rise and breath on them fire,
man-things fall to burning pyre...
may they eats again one time?
or the dragon bone king dine...
final blow to topple down,
and bone pile hits the ground..."
As the kobold finished his song, the near dead warriors shook blood away from wounds that dripped in their eyes.
The kobold gathered anything shiney he saw which went into his wolf-skin satchel, along side the few legs and feelers he gathered.
One of the dwarves pointed at the moon and commented on it beginning to clear away its bloody colour.

It was true...
Skraethas spoke up, he had to say something he was too close! " Yes you hurry, bad things into chasm! yes?"
He pointed to the chasm and a staircase going down into it.
"Go go!!... yes is good, we make sure bad ghosty things not come back!"
One of the man-things nodded, " The kobold may be right, lets check it out, carefully lads..."
The man-things made their way down into the pits below, Skraethas could hear the chitters of the ant-things the sounds of dwarven battle cries and the fizzles of magics.

Skraethas would eat well this morning.

After finally driving the evil back into the darkness below the sands, with the help of the mighty heroes of Blackstone, Edmund Dantes returns to the remains of the Dracolich and pulls a short sword free from its skull, dripping with acid. He begins to think to himself as he scans the withdrawing darkness giving way to dawn.

Alamore's old sword worked well...but I doubt this is the end. I had hoped the Kazrite war would be avoided, but no doubt the dark one will be furious we ruined this unholy night.

He tucks his wings back under his cloak and makes his way back to Blackstone, qiuetly sticking to the remaining shadows, all the while thoughts race through his mind.

Was it worth it? The undead were not even attacking any villages, they confined themselves to the wastes. We may have just made things worse for ourselves....
