BSK is a RP-Lite server.

This means your free to be as imaginative as you wish and enjoy the full realm of RP (Roleplay).
This means you may ignore all interaction and slay monsters until your heart is content.
This means if you want to PvP (Player Verses Player) Arena style your free to do so.

This also means we have a few rules to help keep those who practice very different styles from imposing on eachother.

You are not required to participate in RP, nor are you required to participate in PvP. Monsters do not get much say on this server, though many of them are well skilled in self defense.

If you choose not to participate in RP or to limit those who you will RP with you may find many oppurtunities unavailable to you. Many DM (Dungeon Master) events, for example, are RP based. Also, character who are involved in RP tend to have greater influence and understanding of the happenings on the server.

As for PvP, any killing of a character via PK (Player Killing) must be an event where all involved are informed, willing participants. This even goes for Assassinations. Some question the wisdom of this saying it undermines the Assassins RP. However this fails to meet the concern that the intended victim may not consider the source of the Assassins contract to be a valid RP to begin with. Therefore, * ALL * PK's require consent. I advise taking a screenshot displaying the sending and recieveing of consent should a question rise later.
One exception to this is DM event/warrents.
Another exception is Vampire PC's. Vampires are an RP race which have slightly different rules and currently fall under DM jurisdiction.

Screenshots

From time to time you will see something happen:
  • A bug in the game
  • A fellow player acting inappropriately
  • A scene you just want to save for your own reasons
The way to save these moments is to press the key marked 'PrtScrn' or 'Print Screen'. It is usually on the upper left side of your keyboard.

You may find that you miss the best visual of the screenshot you wished to take. Often if you use the scroll bar in the chat window or the server window you can scroll and obtain a text version of events.

The actual steps to screenshot are:
  1. Adjust your screen to display what you want recorded.
  2. Press the 'PrtScrn' or 'Print Screen' key.
  3. Repeat number 1 and 2 as needed if multiple pictures are required to record all you want saved.
  4. Your screenshots are most often found via Exploring 'My Computer', 'Documents', 'Neverwinter Nights', then 'screenshots'.
  5. Your screen saves will display as .tga files. Your responsible for having a program to open them. Most modern systems can with little or no trouble.
  6. Open and view your screen shot.
If you capture a bug, exploit, or glitch in the scripting, NPC actions, or Bioware flaw.... you can report it in the Bugs Report Forum.

If you record another player violating the server rules, please send the screenshot to a DM.

Lost Items or broken quests.

The game is not perfect.
Your favorite sword might go missing.
The quest target it took you half an hour to kill may fail to drop the item that you need as proof for the quest reward.
Spells may not work or may not work in certain areas.
You may log in dead even though you were fully alive and someplace safe when you logged off.
The item you bought or crafted may lose traits or suddenly change abilities drastically.

This is a world of magic and mystery. It is also a world of scripts and programming. Occassional loss of items is expected and in my opinion a healthy way to encourage players not to be overly dependant on an item. The standing rule is that death and/or material will not be reimbursed. Often, if the loss is do to a bug, we will comensate up to a certian degree as a reward for helping to identify the bug if the loss can be varified. Those who show a 'habit' of loss will find the well of compensation dries up quickly.

However, helping to find and correct bugs and errors can result in a reward. Please post information about such on the Blackstone Bug Report Forum.

You and your router.

If you have more than one person playing on the same router you need to take precautions. As detailed here:
ST_DM_Myle wrote: Make sure your router# for NWN is unique if connected to a network.

If you have more than one person playing on the same router you need to take precautions. THIS IS IMPORTANT PEOPLE.

If you share the same internet connection and you do not have unique route port numbers you will not only lose connection more often, but you may actually leave duplicates on your character in game which will cause your system and possibly the server errors.

If Hunar the Orc is playing with Konak the Dwarf and they are both on the same router port.... this is some of what could happen:

On script saves take place a various times, it is a known Bioware bug that in this situation your character could bounce and actually be saved to a whole different players account. Even your combat and chat information could be erroneously redirected to another players account and effectively spam them all your data.

With a save or death an echo of your character could remain. This could fool the server into thinking you’re already online and deny you access. It could also cause you 'random death' if your echo appears in a hostile location and is slain.

Also, if a DM sees this echo and boots it, it could result in the server booting all those affected by the echo. Which means the echo could be booted, along with the legit character, and possibly even some poor person trying to figure out why your data is spamming their screen.

* * When multiple players use the same connection without unique router ports, bad things happen.
driller wrote:In your nwnplayer.ini, find the section that looks like this:

[Profile]
Client Port=5120

Each of you has to have a different number here.
Example, if your PC is set to 5120, then your buddies port number will have to be 5121, the next guy 5122 and so on.

Thanks,
-driller

If your noticed to cause this error and fail to correct it as prescribed, your character may be booted. If a player is found to knowingly create this error they may be banned in the interest of reducing the errors and hassles it causes for other players. As this can create multible duplicates of characters throughout the server vault, it will be viewed as an Exploit if repeated.

Rule Violation

We get screenshots from players, we take screenshots ourselves, we try to give the benifit of the doubt.
There are times, however, that we have to intervine. Each DM handles things a bit different as we each have out own style.

For myself, most of the time I drop items in players inventories. These tokens have instructions which should be followed. The tokens operate on allowing a player 1 foul and 3 strikes then they are out. I give out scrolls, with the rules in the text description, either to help educate or to give a gentle notice that the character/player has run foul to the rules.

The three strikes tokens are:
Reminder: Comes in 20lbs and 500lbs and takes up one square of inventory. A text of the rules and a warning is included.
Decision: Has weight and takes up 6 squares of inventory. A warning that matters have progressed and a change in behavoir is urgently needed is included.
Warning: Has weight and takes up 4 squares of inventory. Notice that a Ban may follow if any further violations take place is included in the text.

We try to avoid booting or banning players unless a pattern of disruptive behavior is undeniable. The DM team via the forums makes this decision over a period of discussion, unless of course behavior is so inflammatory or disruptive that a DM makes a spot ruling. The best bet is simply to be polite and keep to the rules.

Most players are great fun, keep to the rules, and make this server the success that it is.

The rules, sometimes annoyingly extensive, are in place because of the few who chose to try and use the anonymous nature of NWN to inflict disruption and greif on others in the hope of a rush or out of a desire to force their will and control on others. These kinds of people are predators and miscreants who are not welcome here.

REWARDS and stuff

DM's sometimes grant level rewards. It is something quick and easy to show a player they have done well or that the DM appriciates the effort put into an event.

However I recently learned of a small problem with this. If you are 10th level and earn enough EXP to make it halfway to 15th but do not go through the level up process, you will net an EXP loss when the level is given.

What happens:

Game reads your level of 10.
Game resets your EXP to reflect the awared level +1.
Your level, now 11, is gained, but the EXP which would have otherwise made you 14th level is lost in the math.

The EXP given by creatures still lowers as your EXP rises, so powerlocking a level for better EXP is not the result here.

It seems some players hold leveling so that they can do it with a particular friend and compliment eachothers build. Thats all fine and well, but you set yourself up for potential huge EXP loses.

Please note:
When you gain a level, take your level.

If a DM grants you a level reward and you lose net EXP, that loss will no longer be reimbursed.

Mass Spawnage

Due to the lag and other problems of mass spawning, players are NOT to do this. The excuse that your looting the easy way, by summoning up hostile creatures, is unacceptable. If you feel the need to summon up hostile creatures, do so one or two at a time. Rather than go into all the details and problems caused by mass spawning summons, I will simply state that it is not to be done.

Scheduled Reset Times

Blackstone is designed to reset every 12 hours based on Eastern Standard Time (EST) starting at midnight.

Daylight Savings Time may shift the time slightly, but the times will generally be:

0600
1800

This is done to help reduce lag based errors and keep the scripts running fresh.

Those who are crafting, forging, or otherwise creating or altering things in game may end up losing thier project. It is a good idea to stay alert to the time, especially as reset time approuches.

The Forge, Forge Stones, Socket Gems & Their Properties

Please do not post seeking, or post any listing of, forge stones and their properties.

This information is strickly meant to be discovered IN GAME. The reasons for this are many and include:

Driller's desire that this information be learned through experimentation and effort.
To encourage dialogue in game either IC between characters or even OOC between players. Either is fine, so long as the information is shared "word of mouth".
The properties of the Forge and the Forge Stones is not necessarily set. The effects of using the Forge in general may change and the effects of using any or all of the Forge Stones may change.

There is no guarantee attached to the use of the Forge or the Stones themselves. The results can and may be changed or vanish completely for no reason with no explaniation. The only absolute fact about the Forge is that the magics used are unstable.

Forge Stones and Socket Gems are supplied as features, within the world of Blackstone, to provide variety and offer players an oppurtunity to craft original items. As mentioned above, the results of use of these features is not guaranteed. The availability of these these items is based on a random loot generator and this server in no way promises any specific rate of receiving any forges or sockets in a loot drop.

The forge stones and socket gems are meant to be uncommon and/or rare. Play on the server does not equate to intitlement to receive any forge stones or socket gems.

The server management will not mandate cost controls on those who have a forge stone when they offer one for trade or sale. Barter or sale of these items and all items is left to the supply and demand of the servers player economy.

Special Note regarding the pickpocket skill and forgies: There is a script in place that is designed to keep forge stones from being pickpocketed. If the script becomes buggy for some reason, it may allow forgestones to be stolen. If a pickpocket acquires a forge stone, then it is due solely to a script error. Keeping the stone would be benifiting from a script error and therefore, an exploit.

The rogue is expected to return the forge stone. I suggest the best way of doing this is to find a third party unless you know the player will be a good sport about an OOC return. Otherwise, have the third party person meet them in the temple and return the forge in open OOC chat while your witness is present.

Blackrose

Blackrose is a region of lawlessness. The rules governing PvP and PP actions are not enforced in those areas. Players who take their characters to these places, do so at their own risk!

The server rules that are in place prohibiting exploits of server scripts, game errors, etc.. are still enforced. Also, adult content violations will still meet with strict DM intervention.

If your concerned with the enforcement of specific rules or customs of the server within the Blackrose areas, start a thread and the DM's will address your concerns. Specific findings that are relivant will be added to this post.

Player Fueds:

The server forums are not the proper outlet for player fueds. If a player has a problem with another player, the proper way to handle the situation is to:
1.) Secure screen shots of the disputed situation in case they are needed for review.
2.) Attempt to discuss the matter maturely with the players in question and find an amicable solution.
3.) If the matter can not be handled maturely by the players, the players should STAY AWAY from eachother and refrain from any contact.
4.) If the above does not resolve the dispute, all screen shots should be sent to a member of the DM team for review.

Abuse or misuse of forum previledges can/may result in the suspension of forum access or complete banning from the forums and/or the game server.

Posts that are based on furthering a player fued or calling attention to the fued are subject to being deleted.
Players who wish to communicate over the forums about their feud should use the PM system.

Posting and You....

While posting is not overly regulated here, it seems some of our community could use some instructions.

Thankfully, the AlbinoBlackSheep has put up a funny and informative flash video that should help provide some guidelines for how to use the forums and how to judge the necessity of a post. While our format is a bit different, the basic principles apply.

Enjoy:
