The two builds I always recommend for new players are a STR melee build with UMD or a DC Cleric. A DC cleric would probably be best if you're planning to mainly play solo. This sounds like the AOE bug, it can be triggered randomly by any creature that's standing in an aura / persistent AOE. Shouldn't converting deities only change alignment along the Good/Evil axis? Otherwise players will be able to mix Lawful and non-Lawful classes.

The main reason for Monk is Evasion, AC doesn't really matter for this build.
Access to Holy Avenger is useless for this build because it doesn't use melee weapons, so Paladin isn't a good class choice.
if you don't care about Evasion you can make a Cler38/Bard1/X1 instead.
